Walton Advent Calendar - Day 8

Enjoy The Great Outdoors

Enjoy The Great Outdoors

Winter, despite being cold, is still a great time to enjoy the outdoors. And some activities can only be enjoyed in winter when there's ice or snow: cross-country skiing, ice skating, snow-shoeing, snowmobiling, etc. (Even if conditions aren't great yet for some of these, now's a good time to make sure your ice skates and ski boots fit. If you or your kids need a new pair, start looking now as you may be able to save by finding a pair at a local thrift shop.)

Some ideas for winter activities:

  • Cross-country skiing

  • Downhill skiing

  • Snowboarding

  • Sledding

  • Snowmobiling

  • Snowshoeing

  • Making snowmen with your children

  • Snowball fights with your children

  • Ice skating

  • Ice hockey / Broomball

For cross-country skiing there are several trails on Bear Spring Mountain that we recommend, though it's a bit hilly. If you're a beginner and looking for something flat, the Delhi College Golf Course is open to skiers and snowshoers throughout the winter.

We hope you'll get outside as much as possible this winter. The cold can be unpleasant, but dress in multiple layers and you should be fine. Outdoor activity is especially important if you are prone to seasonal depression. Exercise is always a great treatment for depression, and getting outdoors also provides you with natural light (read more about Season Affect Disorder here, and please see a doctor if you think you are depressed).

Upstate New York is beautiful year round. We hope you'll enjoy it to the fullest!
