The Waltonian - March 29th Newsletter
Warm (and rainy) today. But plenty of warm weather to come, perhaps with some sunny days later in the week. Here's some of what's happening around Walton this week and in the month of April:
The Livestock Foundation is offering a $1,000 scholarship to a 2019 Delaware County high school graduate pursuing a career in agriculture. Applications and essays are due April 15th.
The next round of the Watershed Agricultural Council micro grants program opens for applications on Monday, April 1st. Any farmer, logger, forester, forest landowner or Pure Catskills member with property within the watershed is eligible for the grants within the categories outlined here.
I hope you got out and enjoyed NYS State Maple Weekend last week! But if you didn't, good news: it's actually two weekends this year, so you have tomorrow and Sunday to visit a local sugar house and pick up your favorite maple syrup products. You can also read about one such maple business in the March 13 issue of The Reporter if you missed it.
At the library, on Tuesday, April 2 at 3:00 PM: “Ann Thayer, from the Alzheimer's Association, will be here to discuss the ten warning signs of Alzheimer's and what to look for in yourself and others. Early detection matters.”
Also at the library, on Wednesday, April 10th, 6:00 PM: “Walton native, David Salton, will be here to discuss his book, White Rock, and to reminisce about what it was like to grow up in Walton in the 1950’s. His book will be available for purchase and signing.”
Also at the library, on Thursday, April 18th, 6:30 PM: “Karen Land, public speaker and Iditarod racer, will be here with her dog and gear to talk to us about dog mushing. This is a rare opportunity to get up close and personal with a real-life Iditarod racer and one of the dogs on her team! You won't want to miss this.”
Be sure to check out the library website for more events and programs. They've got a lot going on this month.
Please note that with spring here, meaning conditions are ripe for wildfires, there is a brush burning ban in effect until May 14th. Small campfires using charcoal or untreated wood are allowed, but people should never leave such fires unattended and must extinguish them. Burning garbage or leaves is prohibited year-round.
The Revelers will be at the Walton Theatre on April 6th. Check out their website for a preview of this Louisiana band's eclectic style. Tickets available at the door.
Walton Central School presents The Music Man, tonight and tomorrow night, both at 7:00 PM in the high school auditorium. Tickets available at the door.
If you encounter our newly elected officials, be sure to welcome them to their new roles!
The new roof is going up quickly now at the library. And it looks great!
